Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

COVID-19/Reopening FAQs

When are you going to open?

We are updating our reopening plan as things change and shift. The library plans to reopen in a responsible manner and in phases to ensure that once we do open, we can stay open and continue to serve you. Once we have a date set, we will shout it from the rooftops!

How does Appointment Only Service work?

Appointment Only service is available for patrons needing to use copy/fax/print services. Simply call 921-2556 to make an appointment.

Once you’ve scheduled your appointment time, staff will meet you at the front door and direct you to a designated spot to wait while we serve you.

We ask that patrons observe social distancing throughout the appointment. If patrons have children present, we ask that children stay with their guardian at all times.

At this time, ONLY copy/fax/print services will be provided through appointment only. No appointments may made be made to browse collections or leisure use of computers – sorry!

How does Curbside Service work?

Curbside is a way to serve you while social distancing. It’s similar to restaurant curbside service (minus the delicious food – sorry!). Give us a call at (540) 921-2556, or message us on Facebook or Instagram about the materials you are interested in checking out. We’ll let you know if they are available and then we’ll schedule a time for you to pick them up. At your designated time – just come by and pick up the packet with your name on it and you are good to go :).

There is a 10 (ten) item limit for each patron.

DVDs are still limited to 4 (four) per library card.

Can I use Curbside to check out ten items one day and ten items the next?

Sure! As long as you bring ten items back. Basically, you can only have ten items out at one time. This is to help ensure we can meet demand (you missed us right? Tell us you missed us!).

I couldn’t return my books because the book drops were closed. Do I owe a fine?

Nope! If your books were due on or after March 17 (when we closed to the public), you will not be charged in overdue fines.

Why don’t you have the books I want?

Because of COVID-19, a number of places temporarily shut down or have been operating with fewer employees. Naturally, this creates delays in materials. Don’t worry – the books you love are on their way. In the meantime, can we suggest something else you might enjoy?

I know someone brought back the book I want, why do I have to wait for my books?

As things are returned, they are quarantined for 72 hours before recirculating. This is to ensure the safety of you and your favorite library staff. We promise that we will get that book or movie to you – it may just take a little longer.

Why can’t we come inside?

Bear with us! We really miss you and can’t wait until we can operate as usual, but we believe it’s important to reintroduce things slowly so as to prevent any spikes in Covid-19 cases. Additionally, because our staff is so small, we want to prevent having to shut down again if a staff member becomes ill.

Do I have to wear a mask to use the library?

Just like we can’t make you read Jane Austen, we can’t make you wear a mask.

However, the Commonwealth of Virginia Executive Order 63 does require that anyone over the age of 10 wear a face covering in public buildings. Executive Order 63 strongly encourages children over the age of 2 to wear a face covering. Persons who have trouble breathing, cannot secure or remove the face covering without assistance, or who has a medical condition limiting the use of face coverings are not required to wear a face covering.

Library staff will be wearing masks as they serve you.

What’s the deal with Summer Reading?

We are working on creating an alternative Summer Reading experience for you! This means that the program will begin later than usual, but we are working hard to make sure you have a great summer reading experience :).

Will things be normal when you open back up?

Things may look a little different when we first begin providing service again. For starters, staff will be wearing masks. This is not only for staff’s safety, but yours as well. In addition, plexiglass shields will be in place at the circulation desk and computer stations. Any communal toys, games, or items will not be available right away.

We may also limit the number of patrons using the computers at one time to comply with social distancing and ensure that each computer is disinfected after each use. Certain areas of the library may be sectioned off to ensure social distancing measures are in place. We realize this may be confusing and frustrating at first, but we know that with your help, we can ensure that the library opens safely.

In addition, the library has a county-wide book club that meets in various places around the County. To find out more about the Giles County Bookworms, find us on Facebook or call the library at (540) 921-2556.

The library doesn’t have an item I want – can I request it?

Sure! We love hearing about the titles patrons want to read and do our best to fulfill these requests.

However, please note that a number of factors come into play, including, but not limited to: price of the material, the release date of the material, or how popular the material may be to our patrons.

If we are unable to order a book you requested, you may also request an interlibrary loan.

I’ve lost my library book – what do I do?

Hey, things happen! If you’ve lost your library book, please let our staff know. We do ask that you pay any overdue fines and a replacement fee of half of the book’s value. If the book is a new release, a replacement fee for the entire value of the book may be requested.

If lost your library book has been damaged, please let our staff know. We do ask that you pay any overdue fines and a replacement fee of half of the book’s value. If the book is a new release, a replacement fee for the entire value of the book may be requested.
