Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

COVID-19/Reopening FAQs

I couldn’t return my books because the book drops were closed. Do I owe a fine?

Nope! If your books were due on or after March 17 (when we closed to the public), you will not be charged in overdue fines.

Why don’t you have the books I want?

Because of COVID-19, a number of places temporarily shut down or have been operating with fewer employees. Naturally, this creates delays in materials. Don’t worry – the books you love are on their way. In the meantime, can we suggest something else you might enjoy?

I know someone brought back the book I want, why do I have to wait for my books?

As things are returned, they are quarantined for 72 hours before recirculating. This is to ensure the safety of you and your favorite library staff. We promise that we will get that book or movie to you – it may just take a little longer.

Do I have to wear a mask to use the library?

Just like we can’t make you read Jane Austen, we can’t make you wear a mask.

However, the Commonwealth of Virginia Executive Order 63 does require that anyone over the age of 10 wear a face covering in public buildings. Executive Order 63 strongly encourages children over the age of 2 to wear a face covering. Persons who have trouble breathing, cannot secure or remove the face covering without assistance, or who has a medical condition limiting the use of face coverings are not required to wear a face covering.

Library staff will be wearing masks as they serve you.

What’s the deal with Summer Reading?

We are working on creating an alternative Summer Reading experience for you! This means that the program will begin later than usual, but we are working hard to make sure you have a great summer reading experience :).

The program will begin on July 22 and parents may pickup Summer Reading packets each Wednesday from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the Library Reading Garden. Registration ends July 10.

You’re open, so things are back to normal right?

Things may look a little different when you visit us again. For starters, staff will be wearing masks. This is not only for staff’s safety, but yours as well. In addition, plexiglass shields will be in place at the circulation desk and computer stations. Any communal toys, games, or items will not be available right away. We encourage patrons to wash their hands frequently, wear a face mask, and practice social distancing. If you are sick, or think you might be sick, we ask that you visit us when you are well.

We may also limit the number of patrons using the computers at one time to comply with social distancing and ensure that each computer is disinfected after each use. Certain areas of the library may be sectioned off to ensure social distancing measures are in place. We realize this may be confusing and frustrating at first, but we know that with your help, we can ensure that the library continues to operate safely.
